Review of Blackfish (2013) by Danny R — 23 Apr 2015
Blackfish was an amazingly simple, stunning, documentary on Seaworld. They use an excellent variety of interviews, and documentations as evidence from valid sources. They interviewed former Seaworld trainers who recount their experiences with the whales, and how Seaworld handled problems with the whales. The documentary looks into the many deaths and injuries of trainers, and the poor decisions and actions that led to them, as well as the cruel treatment of the whales that led to the attacks. They interviewed workers of OSHA, the department of work safety, who has filed many lawsuits against Seaworld. They also interviewed scientists who study killer whales, giving insight on how what Seaworld is doing is wrong. They also interviewed family members of a trainer who was killed, adding an emotional side to the interviews.
Footage wise, there were many breathtaking, emotional shots of the whales. They also used real footage of the attacks, and how the trainers interacted with the whales. They showed the lives of killer whales in the wild, as well as the ones in captivity, and the contrast they showed. They showed how the killer whales were captured, and the illegal things Seaworld did with that. Overall, this was an amazingly well done documentary that showed the true colors of the company Seaworld.
