Review of Blackfish (2013) by James S — 02 May 2014
Yet another cinematic documentary, this time focusing on the implicitly timid, lovable 'killer whales', or in this case 'blackfish'. It proves to be a fascinating and intense story depicting the truthful treatment and stories involving these stunning creatures.
Those whales used for theme park shows and stunts are the main focus of the film, enlightening the viewer to the conditions they are kept in, how they were initially captured, and the unnatural ways in which they communicate with their new companions.
Whilst I would rejoice at the sight of the renowned 'Shamu', I would now have to question my morality were I to indulge in such entertainment, knowing that it is ultimately wrong. I also had no idea that attacks on trainers were so frequent, raising the question of why on earth such activity still exists today.
Of course that answer is likely to be money, but having witnessed 'Blackfish's' graphic images and videos, money should surely take a backseat.
