Review of Blackfish (2013) by Dylan M — 23 Apr 2015
Gabriela Cowperthwaite's Blackfish (2013), is a surprisingly captivating film about orcas. The film successfully tells the story of Tilikum, an emotionally abused whale that gets transferred from Sealand of the Pacific to SeaWorld, with a history of killing a trainer.
The movie explores whether keeping killer whales in captivity is safe, or even moral. It goes on to interviews of former trainers that worked with the deceased Dawn Brancheau, and other people who specialize in neuroscience and marine biology.
The use of B-Roll and Graphics to help provide some backstory really worked. The sound editing was fantastic, and intense at times. And the interviews are extremely engaging. The film definitely convinced me that SeaWorld and other marine mammal parks disregard the safety of trainers and are a bad environment for killer whales.
