Review of Blackfish (2013) by Jordan Z — 23 Apr 2015
Blackfish was a emotionally striking video. With an array of footage from interviews to videos of actually whale attacks. The best thing about this documentary was the emotion. Not only the emotion we saw threw the interviewees, but the emotion brought out from us through the film.
I liked how the director interviewed former SeaWorld Trainers, it gave us a little insight on what happens on the inside. To add, it was good he used former trainers because they actually had worked with the whales before.
This was useful because when the interviewer talked to them about the whales that attacked, you could see the real emotion from the people that used to work with the whales. Another thing to add about the interviewees, is that it was astonishing to see that they barely knew what was going inside of their own workplace.
It brought out how sneaky SeaWorld actually is. Another thing I enjoyed about this film was the real life footage. I feel like if they didn't show us the footage of the actual attacks, it would've been harder to believe.
Another good persuasion tactic I notice was how they used famous people, such as Whoopi Goldberg, to show how they felt about the situation. Using famous people's feelings in the video made us think the same way, further showing us how bad SeaWorld is.
As for the emotion that the film brought out in the viewers, I think it did a really good job of making us really think "Is this okay?" When we go to amusement parks or aquariums, we're only thinking about how fun it is or how cool the acts are.
No one is ever really thinking about how the animals are taken care of. that is why I think Blackfish was such an important film, by showing us former trainers emotions it shows how real this actually is and that it needs to be stopped.
