Review of Blackfish (2013) by Thien H — 05 Jan 2016
Blackfish is a modern documentary created to expose the truth on the corruption at SeaWorld. This film raises eyebrows and invokes controversies against the multi-billion dollar business and its ethics. Blackfish is about the captivity of Orcas also known as "Killer Whales", the film not only questions the ethics of imprisoning the creatures, but it also states the dangers of doing so.
Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite displays an amazing use of eyewitnesses and former employees, not only to strengthen then plot of the film but to also draw strong emotions from the audience. This film talks about the atrocities committed against the Orcas, and how dangerous it is to put an animal who is nicknamed killer into a concrete pool with a human. This film focuses on the capture of Tilikum an orca captured off the shores of Iceland.
If there is anything to be worked on by the director it could be the main argument, because for some amateur film critics may misperceive the tone of the director. By main argument I meant how it is directed or played out for the audience, for some just watching might miss the main point that the film tries to broadcast.
Overall this is a very fine example of how a documentary should be made and displayed. This documentary is not just all information and boring, it manages to make a connection with viewers in the audience with the goal not only to inform but to unite against the atrocities against orcas and orca captivity.
