Review of Black Widow (2021) by Kingleil — 18 Jul 2021
Do not pay for this movie. It had some good moments, but overall isn’t worth it bc they did such a **** job with character development. The ending was just very bad over the top action. Not a lot of investment in terms of emotions, and the family dynamics just were cheap. Flat characters in most cases, except for Florence Pugh. Everyone else may as well have just been a prop. The worst of the MCU by far, it made some other Disney films look like masterpieces.
I don’t know what’s up with the critics reviews; the scores are way inflated for whatever reason. They were really phoning in the acting, the action, and the plot. I’m having the sense the audience is much more split on how good it was. I went to see it with 3 women and 2 men, and we all agreed, not even worth staying to see the post credits. It made Loki look like a god damn Oscar contender, despite it being a TV show.
Far, far, far, more props and nonsensical moments than should have been for a comic movie. Even Spider-Man had better sequencing, direction, and acting. I felt like this was just tossing a bone to Scarjo for all the **** she put up with, but overall, missed the mark in terms of gravity. Black Panther was way better, by miles, and hell so was Wandavision and Cpt America / Winter Soldier.
I think the biggest let down of the entire film: the chance to satisfyingly end things was literally just written off, and instead went to a trite scene special effects. Instead of a harrowing moment, you just got a face full of bull**** special effects.
