Review of Black Water (2008) by Matt J — 01 Jan 2009
OK, there are plot holes in this bigger than a Croc's jaw (some of the bites are minimal, whilst others are massive; not drowning in a death roll; and a Croc hunting at night- they're cold blooded...and the gun - don't get me started on that). But this is quite different to Rogue (and comparisons have to happen - released in the same year, made in different ways) - for a start the Crocs are real (not some enormous machine/CGI) and you can get attached to the characters more easily as they're not overly stereotyped.
As a small budget film, this needs to do a number of things well in this genre...get you attached to the leads and have "something out there" that although you don't see it still grips you...that "unseen suspense". But unlike Rogue (which I actually started to laugh at when the reveal and finale happened), this does both.
This will never be the perfect movie, but it's a damn fine effort.
