Review of Black Water (2008) by Matthew G — 03 Oct 2009
More of a phychological thriller than a monster flick - Black water tells the story of 3 Australians road tripping it across Australia who decide to try their hand at fishing. As the trailer would suggest they get stranded when a crocodile attacks, and flips over, their boat - thus forcing them to take refuge in the trees that are growing in the middle of this lake.
This film follows the same method as "Jaws", in that you only see the crocodile a few select times. Needless to say when you do see it, its a beautiful shot and continues to add to the protagonists fear and desperation as they're stalked throughout the day by this invisible predator. I have to admit, there were a few times when I was taken totally by suprise at the twists and turns the story took.
Acting was average and the script wasn't that much better. As said before, the crocodile shots and effects were pretty good, but as you don't really see these shots that often they don't really elevate the story as high as it could have been. Overall, this is a decent watch with a decent premise to keep you on edge until the films end - just don't expect a lot of bllod and gore.
