Review of Black Swan (2010) by Emerson B — 09 Aug 2013
Since this movie has come out, I've found myself discussing it with mainly women. Even though the movie revolves around Natalie Portman (White Swan) and Mila Kunis (Black Swan) it is by no means a women's movie.
It's grown on me as I've seen it a few times since it's release and has become one of my favorite films and can be distilled down to its ballet structure. As with similar spirals into psychological darkness, the line between facade of the ballet, Portman's personal life, and Portman's hallucinations puts the viewer in the protagonist's shoes to advance the narrative.
Tchaikovsky's musical motifs perfectly fit over the film's sequences and paint a stark mood which increases with intensity and velocity of the plot as fragmented as it may be.
