Review of Black Swan (2010) by Oliver H — 28 Jul 2014
'Black Swan' was a defining moment in Natalie Portman's acting career but on its own it stands as a deeply psychological and excellent twisted film. Darren Aronofsky not only does this by constructing the tale of a trouble dancer in a prestigious company but he also accentuates Nina Sayers' (Portman) psychosis with his chilling visual style.
This film really is not for the faint-hearted and there are moments where it will make you cringe, even if it is about rehearsing for "Swan Lake," the beloved Tchaikovsky ballet. Portman is great here and she really does take you down a troubled path.
She is innocent as Nina/White Swan but shows her aggressive/troubled side when playing the Black Swan. Mila Kunis also makes an effective appearance as Lilly, who serves as a rival to Nina. Visually entrancing yet disturbing, artful yet morbid, 'Black Swan' is a really good step for Aronofsky.
