Review of Black Swan (2010) by Mark M — 16 Jan 2013
A MASTERPIECE! A monumental cinematic achievement. There have been rare occasions that at the end of watching a movie I practically gasped & quietly said "wow" to myself! This is one. Absolutely awe inspiring film making!
Simply put, this is a work of genius. The film is suspense, it is horror, it is dripping with a psychosexual delirium & may be the most uncomfortable film I have ever seen and I loved every frame of it! Black Swan is truly a piece of art & it is what great cinema aspires to be & very rarely actually achieves.
Black Swan is truly a masterpiece in every way.
Natalie Portman's performance is completely deserving of her Academy Award for Best Actress with every gesture, body movement she delivers perfection. This is a near impossible role from some perspectives but with absolute precision Portman delivers on every note. She is supported by an extremely strong film team and a talented group of actors.
The cinematography in this film is brilliant! Absolutely brilliant with it's constant tight positioning of shots in relation to the actors always creating and unbridled tension & an uncomfortable intimacy that drives the thrilling pace & the gloriously uncomfortable feel this film evokes with each successive scene driving a delirious pace towards it's climax like no other film I have ever seen.
Darren Aronofsky should have won for best director by a long ways with his absolutely masterful work of genius. This is directing at such a high level he has created a new stratosphere for directors to aspire too. The directing is that good.
An absolutely awe inspiring film. It doesn't get any better than this.... Black Swan LOVED IT!
