Review of Black Swan (2010) by Josh K — 05 May 2013
Darren Aronofsky has got to be one of our greatest filmmakers, alongside Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg. Aronofsky tackles ballet in this dark retelling of the Tchaikovsky play Swan Lake.
Aronofsky has noted that this film can be viewed as a companion piece to his film The Wrestler. This can be accurate since both films focus heavily on different kinds of art. The Wrestler focuses on wrestling and this film focuses on ballet.
Natalie Portman delivers a terrific performance as a ballet dancer who fights to get the lead role in a new version of Swan Lake. Mila Kunis gives a terrific supporting performance as her double, as well as Vincent Cassel and Barbara Hershey.
This film is absolutely intense and disturbing, while Aronofsky gives a mind blowing film. Certain scenes will definitely disturb viewers, while the film also feels like a Roman Polanski film at times.
Job well done Aronofsky, or more importantly bravo!
