Review of Black Swan (2010) by Luis R — 30 Jul 2013
It takes a smart filmmaker to make Black Swan and Darren Aronofsky has proven to be more than smart. Black Swan is less of a film but more of a performance. Technically, a performance of Swan Lake. Black Swan is essentially an adaptation of Swan Lake.
..about Swan Lake. Once you throw in Mr. Aronofsky and a stellar performance by Natalie Portman it plays off like dark poetry. There is a mountain of symbolism throughout, aided by Darren's excellent sense of direction.
A major theme in the film is the doppelgänger, or, the double. From the very beginning we see mirrors throughout. Literal mirrors and figurative mirrors. Nina is the White Swan and Lily is the mirror, the doppelgänger, the Black Swan.
Even Nina's mother is a mirror for Nina herself and a symbol for her conscience and innocence. I can go on and on but long story short, Black Swan deserves a standing ovation.
