Review of Black Sunday (1960) by Jonathan V — 29 Jun 2013
While the soundtrack leaves much to be desired with the dubbed version's flat--and almost hopeless--voice characterization and overwrought music, the visual atmospherics and the story more than make up for it.
I would give it a 7 our of 10, but on a 5-star scale it deserves a 3-star rating. The cinematography and the effects are superb, with the former standing up well over time,k while the latter represent what must have been utterly shocking and even a bit overwhelming for the era of cinema in which they first appeared.
The scenario is solid enough to be re-made, and if the visual style can be translated to modern color photography, then a very solid horror film could be made. Just sayin": someone should re-work this and make a small fortune doing it.
