Review of Black Snake Moan (2006) by Louis E — 23 Oct 2009
Clearly this was not a movie I intended to think much about or enjoy. From the trailers and what I read before it came out, I thought it was a movie simply about one thing: Christina Ricci parading around half naked.
... Don't get me wrong, that was a large part of what went on in the movie :-), and, as a guy, I appreciate that, but was it enough to hold my attention for two hours? Suprisingly, this movie has many layers and deep, darker, complex characters than what I anticipated.
To sum up, the two characters (Samuel Jackson and Ricci) find each other at a time when they need one another and they each become stronger people as a result of each other''s influence. What was really intriguing was the use of music used throughout the movie.
Blues music seems to be a character of it's own in the movie and is spread and used throughout to give pause and reflection for both the audience and the two main characters. Justin Timberlake shows a suprising range of acting ability as the anxiety filled boyfriend and Ricci and Jackson are ok, but not kick you're butt out of the seat good (Jackson could sleepwalk through most of the stuff he does and still make it look easy -- but it's not).
So, I recommend this movie but with the caveat that there is a lot of nudity, lot of language (no not just talking but the plug you're ears kind), but it's not what you expect and there is enough of a good message behind it that it might work for you.
Oh yeah, Ricci parades around half naked as well..........:-).
