Review of Black Snake Moan (2006) by Phil S — 18 Aug 2009
Really enjoyable and surprisingly endearing film, which you wouldn't expect given the rather adult opening and themes thrown around liberally. A pretty skinny Ricci plays the troubled trashy girl, taken in by Sam Jacksons blues singing jilted farmer, determined to purge her of her demons, and at the time some of his own.
.. Great performances from both, although Jackson ain't no blues singer!!! None of the themes really dig THAT deep into the dark stuff, but there are enough hints to keep it going. The scene with 'Black Snake Moan' while Jackson fights back the bad folk at the door with his blues was awesome, and the hot, stormy southern, bluesy atmos really adds to the film.
Very good.
