Review of Black Snake Moan (2006) by Shawn L — 04 Mar 2011
While the first hour is by far the the strongest part of the film - tense, uncomfortable, with some of the best howlingly laugh-out-loud deadpan moments and some (perhaps unintentional) nods to other films I like - and the second unravels at the seams, the cast carries the film through to the end.
It just felt like someone said, "oh, yeah, the movie needs THEMES" and then tried very hard to make to put some Deep Thought in there, and that sort of thing never ends well. Jackson makes almost anything watchable (well, except for the one film that won't be named, fuck off, George Lucas), I'm not normally a fan of Ricci but her body language is a joy to gape at (even when she isn't in Hardcore Slut mode, titty bouncing all over the place), and Timberlake, though it pains me to admit it, is actually convincing in his role.
It's quite good, really, if you don't mind struggling a little through the last hour. Also: PURPLE GUITAR. Purple guitar that protects you from INNER DEMONS while the music SAVES YOUR SOUL. What's not to love?
