Review of Black Snake Moan (2006) by Ryan V — 05 Sep 2012
Rae (Christina Ricci) is a young sex addict whose lover (Justin Timberlake) has abandoned her for the army. Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson) is a weary ex-blues musician whose wife has left him for his brother.
When a violent event forces their paths to cross, Lazarus takes it upon himself to chain Rae to his radiator until he can "cure her of her demonic ways". Black Snake Moan has a trashy and exploitive premise, but it takes itself way too seriously to be fun in a pulpy sort of way.
Overall, it's preachy, overacted, boring, implausible, grating, and features characters who seem to follow the dictates of the script rather than any kind of organic personal arc.
