Review of Black Sheep (2010) by James S — 23 Feb 2009
Horror comedy. That most complex of sub genres that is so hard to get right. In fact, I'm not convinced anyone has really managed it yet.Black Sheep certainly does not manage it. They're sheep.
Okay, so they're genetically modified sheep but nonetheless, they're still sheep. Aside from blocking a narrow country road, there's not much to really get worried about. Unless you're bitten by one of these bleeters but why that would turn you into a giant sheep is never really addressed properly.
The film raises one or two wry smiles and chuckles but it's just too preposturously ridiculous to be scary and not really all that funny either. The film rolls along without any direction or sense of amusement and at the end of the day, the creatures could be anything and the fact that they're sheep almost becomes irrelevant and the film becomes nothing more than another disappointing horror comedy.
