I sincerely cannot decide if I should review "Black Sheep" as a serious piece of filmmaking or as the joking qualf that I sincerely hope the filmmakers were going for. And because I have a reputation- and commonsense- I'm gonna give this movie two stars (those are relative anyway) and take the fun road.

I remember when a good friend of mine told me about this movie. I thought she was kidding... and then I watched the trailer. I snickered at the display before me and then the tagline of gold hit me: "The Violence of the Lambs." Holy crap. Not only are these New Zealanders punning one of the greatest thrillers in film history, but it actually completely fits.

(Footnote: I just noticed on the poster it says "Get the Flock Out of Here." -- This makes my day.).

So, the bottom line with "Black Sheep" is that I'm going to plead ignorance to the reality that Jonathan King may want people to take his movie seriously. I am almost positive this isn't so, but who knows...

I do know that he has seen Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive," the 1992 gross-out fest ol' Jack made before dominating Fantasyland. It, too, is set in New Zealand and creates such a ludicrous plot with such ludicrous (and kind of pitiful) special effects, only his momma would be proud. But to each his own, right? *snicker*.

Oh, the dialogue in this movie!- Lest I forget: (After a sheep drives a truck with the three main characters off a cliff... no, seriously) "What a gorgeous view!" "My truck's gone." "My dad fell to his death over this cliff." ... rotfl...?

(After a character sees that one of his feet has turned into a sheep hoof) "Oh, it's all right mate, I'll just go to the vet and get a tetnus shot.".

It is almost as if the sheep give these people a run for their money in the IQ race.

And, finally, when two sheep corner (in a field, mind you) a man. Oh my favorite: the man stands in front of them for a second and then barks. Twice. Then, gasp, one of the sheep bites the crap out of his butt and while the camera is faithfully focused on the man's wailing face, the second sheep Jackie Chan tackles him. What clever filmmaking!

It's a pity the movie didn't set itself up for a sequel. Too much of a good thing, maybe?

Too baaad.

Oh dang it.
