A generic fish-out-of-water cop thriller, lifted slightly above the norm by Scott's visual style. Osaka is beautifully filmed in shades of grey, emphasising the alienation of the lead characters. Aesthetically pleasing as this movie undoubtedly is, this isn't enough to fully overcome the cardboard characterisation or the huge leaps of faith the audience is forced to take in order to accept the story (would a cop under investigation by Internal Affairs really be allowed to escort a criminal back to Japan?).

The climactic shoot-out looks great but is highly cliched, and the motorcycle chase that harks back to the (cheesy) opening scenes reminds us just how conventional this movie is. It's not a bad film, but it's only a minor Scott effort.
