Review of Black Rain (1989) by Jósef G — 25 Oct 2008
Black Rain is Ridley Scott on cruise control. Take the glorious production design of Blade Runner, and adapt the plot of an American detective (Michael Douglas) searching for a dangerous member of the Yakuza; don't forget to add some Japanese cultural code of honor and stir lightly and you have Black Rain.
Fast-paced and visually striking, it's a shallow, somewhat predictable cop-thriller, but it's really all about style, and it is glorious in this regard. While it very well maybe just a forgettable exercise in style, it does entertain, and Ridley Scott uses the exotic and diverse landscape of Japan wonderfully.
Don't expect too much going into it and maybe you'll just get lost in the scenery. I sure did.
