Dynamic shafts of light thrust through a ventilation fan. Rain-slicked pavements become mirrors to garish Japanese neon signs overhead. A katana produces showers of sparks as it's dragged across the floor.
Yes, Black Rain has an average plot, the type of cop movie Hollywood churns out almost every year. But look closely.
Key word: LOOK.
Director Ridley Scott rose above the run-of-the-mill script by concentrating on visual appeal instead, and made Black Rain nothing less than a stylistic masterpiece. Ripped-off countless times but never bettered, this is a tour de force of imagery that also boasts one of Hans Zimmer's most iconic scores.
