Review of Black Panther (2018) by Jonty C — 31 Dec 2018
Great look, and some nifty fight scenes, but--strictly as an action flick--nothing we haven't seen before. Chadwick Boseman is fine as the heroic young king of the hidden (and ultra high-tech) African nation of Wakanda, but the plot, with its good guys and bad guys, sci-fi wizardry, and incessant flashbacks, confuses rather than elucidates, and--truth be told--even all the mano a mano throwdowns grow stale after awhile. With Angela Bassett as the Queen Mother, and Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong'o as two of.
Boseman's bad-ass soldiers. (Kudos to director Ryan Coogler for giving the film such an unmistakably Amazonian vibe.) Also starring Michael B. Jordan as Boseman's streetwise arch-rival, Andy Serkis as the main villain, and Martin Freeman as Boseman & Co.'s CIA sidekick. Worth seeing? Certainly. But it's hard to deny: this is one cat that could have used some fixin'.
