Review of Black Panther (2018) by Benjamin L — 20 Dec 2018
With the hype surrounding the film and the critics raving it to be better than "The Dark Knight". I couldn't help but go in smiling and thinking it was gonna be a blast. Alas when the movie finished I was more disappointed than I was impressed.
The CGI was very spotty and looked cartoonish during action sequences. The villain was borderline average, he had potential with his argument but the movie does not make it compelling. Andy Serkis character was underused and pointless, only briefly delving into the past as Wakandas most wanted but what was it, no build up.
The movie does have bright spots, the plot is mostly different from what you would see in other movies and it was interesting, similar to "The Dark Knight Rises" in a way. The extravagant culture of Wakanda shown was unique and really cool to see.
Altogether the movie does nothing to move the genre forward at all, its story is unique and the different culture are the only things going for it. A "masterpiece" it is not, more like another average superhero movie that was overrated because it was different.
It does not deserve a nomination and it does not top "The Dark Knight" or "Logan" in any way at all as they remain the shining example of what superhero movies should be.
