Review of Black Orpheus (1959) by Mark R — 27 Apr 2009
I understand why this movie was a huge success when it came out. It introduced America and the world to the bossa nova beat. For that, "Orfeu Negro" should and will always be commended. But I don't think the film really holds up all that well today.
The music seems to repeat itself throughout the film's duration. The acting is often sub-par. The characters aren't really believable. The story is practically missing. I know it's based on the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, but since the film is set in reality, I expected a little more. The movie also spends too much time showcasing people dancing and singing for no other reason than to "experience" Carnival. Frankly, I just didn't care.
Like I said, "Orfeu Negro" brought a realitvely unknown culture into the mainstream and it succeeds in doing that. But other than showing some pretty people dancing amidst pretty scenery, I didn't really get anything out of it.
