Review of Black Orpheus (1959) by Laurie O — 30 Oct 2010
This is a gorgeous movie filmed in one of the favelas surrounding Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, it stars Bruno Mello who was, at the time, a famous Brasilian futbol star.
Filmed in 1959, it's surprisingly fresh, very sexy without being explicit, and beautifully, gorgeously filmed. The symbolism is fascinating but not so heavy-handed that those unfamiliar with the myth would feel confused.
The office of missing persons scene is haunting, as is the Candomble ceremony. I loved this film.
