Review of Black Narcissus (1947) by Colin P — 15 Jun 2007
The team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger contributed a wonderful repertoire of film during their careers in film. Perhaps the best example of their masterpieces is "Black Narcissus".
It is a story about a convent of nuns and their sexual repression, passion, and faith set among the beautiful background of the Himalayas. The screenplay by Pressburger is brilliant--it isn't elaborate, but is just enought to get the point across.
The most amazing aspect of this film is that it was all done in a studio. The matte paintings of the Himalayas are gorgeous. One of the great cinematographers, Jack Cardiff, did his greatest work on this beautiful film.
