Review of Black Narcissus (1947) by Donovan S — 19 Sep 2010
Perhaps a bit too melodramatic at some points, but I still really liked it. I enjoyed the thematic exploration of the repression that seems inherent in the Catholic system and the contrast of Sister Clodagh versus Sister Ruth in terms of how they handle the repression and the feelings they're trying to hold back. In reality they really aren't that different at all. I didn't invest that much in the storyline of the Young General and I think Powell was aiming for something that I wasn't following him on but I liked the performer. I'm also very much enjoying Powell/Pressburger's use of Technicolor and matte paintings/backgrounds in this particular film. I could always tell when it was clearly a painted background but that never stopped me from appreciating the shot if that makes sense.
I haven't loved either of the films in the Filmspotting Powell/Pressburger marathon so far but I do appreciate them and I doubt I would've seen them without the marathon. Looking forward to Peeping Tom and The Red Shoes.
