Review of Black Mass (2015) by Camille L — 27 Nov 2015
A violent film that wastes its incredible cast. Terrific performances by Johnny Depp, Kevin Bacon and Joel Edgerton get lost in a horribly disjointed story. The FBI's collaboration in building the Winter Hill Gang gets buried while the movie focuses on brutal murders.
We never see the broader crimes for which Whitey Bulger engaged, only the psychopathic behaviors involved in killing enemies and friends. There's only a simple thread of history to make this story relevant.
Best to watch The Godfather, Scarface or Bonnie and Clyde for a decent crime saga. Pass on this beast even with Depp's transformative performance.
