Black Mass is a dark crime drama/ thriller based on the book of the same name that due to a gripping true story and strong performances, hits the mark.The story opens in 1975 when Bulger ( Johnny Depp) fights along the Italian mob to control the criminal enterprises of south Boston.
At the same time FBI man John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) is commissioned to try and take down the Italian Mafia. John who is an old childhood friend of Bulger convinces him to turn stitch to help bring down the Italian mob.
An unholy alliance that ultimately gets out of hand as Bulger gets to pretty much do what he wants. Manipulating Connolly for his own ends. Depp gives a compelling performance of a character who is both repulsive and fascinating.
A paranoid sociopath who manipulates those around him for his own bidding. Depp keeps you glued to the screen and is an absolute revelation here. In fact all performances are strong though this film isn't really a deep character study.
The only thing about this film that could be taken as negative is that it's very serious and dark. Most Mob films have some dark humour, Black Mass as a very cold dark tone with not much humour or many lighter scenes.
Still a gripping drama, held together by strong performances and one of the better films of 2015.
