Black Mass tells us everything we need to know about James "Whitey" Bulger in the most horrifying of ways. The acting is all-around superb, but makeup artists went a little overboard on Johnny Depp, our main subject, and that can be distracting at times.
It is Joel Edgerton, cast as corrupt FBI agent John Connolly, who shines brightest in Black Mass. A Best Supporting Actor nomination from the Academy would punch home that point.
