Review of Black Mass (2015) by Chris W — 03 Sep 2016
Black Mass is a colossal waste of time and talent. Cooper has assembled a terrific cast at the top of their game in a potentially gritty gangster story packed with intrigue and moral conundrums. In Depp he has the perfect leading man to bring an otherworldly loopiness to the stalwart street-level thug.
Add a period setting and we should have been looking at the next LA Confidential. Except they decide to go into production with a script so undercooked it would give the most hardened stomach cinematic salmonella.
Character development is non-existent, the plot loses all pace after half an hour and nothing is satisfactorily resolved. True story be damned, you are making a movie not a documentary - use some artistic licence and grip your audience.
I feel for Depp, as hard as he tries the film's malaise lets what could have been an Oscar winning performance slip through his fingers.
