Review of Black Mass (2015) by John Eric D — 21 Jan 2016
Any films about 70's - 80's mafia is gonna be awesome to me. And this one never failed, it even exceed my expectation. I was like, "woah, never thought that could be any good," and it was excellent.
When I saw Depp as the main character, I was like, damn can he pull this off, maybe I can see a redundant character as he portrayed the same in his previous films. But no, he was terrific in this movie.
A lot of characters of this film are fantastic. Depp as Whitey Bulger is fantastic, he brings an A to this character. What I love about his character is he never gives a shit on what bull crap he or she talked, all he wanted is straight to the point.
He's a very straight forward guy. And he has some rules on how you trust him thus he gives his trust to you. And what I liked bout this film is that, some conversations are unforgettable. One scene that sticks to me is when they're having a dinner and Bulger asked this one police guy "What is the secret on this stake".
And that guy respond "It's a family secret". Yet he still shares the secret recipe but a disappointed Bulger says "Why would you say a secret which is a secret". Scenes like that are awesome to me.
It gave us lessons even though he's the most wanted mafia leader, he is a man of his word. Very character driven film which is fantastic. A must see.
