Review of Black Mass (2015) by Tyler R — 27 Jul 2016
As I've said before, there are some films that work almost solely based on the cast. Black Mass is one of them. This film tells the fictional account of mobster Whitey Bulger and his fall from grace.
Lately, Johnny Depp has been turning in some highly irritating and highly forgettable characters. Here, he presents another character, fully equipped with prosthetics and colored lenses. However, this one is actually very interesting.
Depp is his most intense here, commanding an entire scene with a single word or look. He hasn't been better in ages. As for those around him, they all hold their own very well. There's chemistry where there needs to be, as well as tension.
On the acting front, everything is great. Unfortunately, the pacing is all over the place. There are some parts that fly by with breakneck speed, others that creep with aching tension. This is all to be expected, but the transitions between these scenes aren't smooth, which leaves behind a slightly jarring effect.
Overall, though, the film is good, especially for a fictional one that could have very easily been bogged down on any one event for too long.
