Was he or wasn't he an informant? It's clear he was mishandled by the FBI, and it's clear he was a stone cold killer. If it feels like "The Departed" at times, it's cause "The Departed" pulled in real life elements of Whitey Bulger's world.
While Depp's portrayal is terrifically haunting, the movie lacks the same flare as other gangster movies. Which is strange, because this is as real as it gets.
