Review of Black Mass (2015) by Tim G — 26 Apr 2016
Based on the true-life story of notorious Boston mobster "Whitey" Bulger, Black Mass is a gritty and compelling crime drama. In an effort to rid Boston of the Mafia during the 1970s the FBI makes a deal with local Irish crime boss Jimmy Bulger to become an informant, but secretly Bulger uses his protected status to get rid of his rivals and expand his operations.
Featuring Johnny Depp, Peter Sarsgaard, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton, and Kevin Bacon, the film has a strong cast that delivers some impressive performances. And the costumes and set designs are especially well-done; immersing the audience in the look and feel of the time.
However, the script is a little weak and doesn't really give a good sense of Bulger's criminal operation or his relationships. Yet while Black Mass has some problems, it's an interesting look at one of America's most infamous and powerful mobsters.
