Review of Black Mass (2015) by The Blue G — 15 Apr 2017
Out of what could have been just another "FBI infiltrates the mob" formula flick, Johnny Depp mines pure gold. Frankly, I've never before seen Depp perform a character so sinister and genuinely scary as Jimmy Bulger, and he delivers a performance of a lifetime.
This is no sympathetic, multi-faceted portrayal of an organized crime boss, as James Gandolfini delivered in The Sopranos. Rather, "Black Mass" is Depp's turn as a cold-blooded, real-life psychopathic killer, and he totally sells it.
Definitely should have been nominated for an Oscar.
