Review of Black Mass (2015) by Stephen C — 14 Apr 2016
Johnny Depp has made some awful films recently so I am glad to tell you that this is the best thing he has been in, in ages.
Deep is super menacing as James Whitey Bulger a Boston criminal with a taste for murder and a get out of jail card from the FBI.
They want to bring down the Italian Mafia in Boston and they assign agent John Connolly to become Bulgers handler.
The trouble starts when Connolly lets the power go to his head and lets Bulger operate with a freehand in the Boston underworld creating a climate of fear and murder and double cross which ends with Bulger becoming Americas biggest target criminal.
Depp is simply brilliant here and the role shows you that he is still and actor of great presence.
Joel Edgerton shows that he is more than a match for Depp as Connolly and Benedict Cumberbatch is suitably noble as Depp's politician brother .
Scott Cooper keeps a vice like grip on proceedings and by the end you will be shocked by how much free reign The FBI gave its nations most notorious villians.
