Review of Black Mask (1996) by Sean D — 03 Oct 2009
I'm not gonna lie, this movie is fucking ridiculous at parts. Mostly due to the use of sound, plot, story. Can't help but shake the feeling that there's a lot that was cut out of the English release, since the original Hong Kong print is no where to be found (QT, find it please).
However, there are some good things about this flick. As far as martial arts movies, it's fairly original with having a goth-themed criminal organization combined with the fluid grace of Yuen Woo Ping's choreography and evened out with a score consisting of a mixture of Rap and Hip Hop.
There are several interesting and bad ass set pieces but the rest of the film feels too thin to really support them. Overall, worth renting but don't feel surprised if you think it sucks.
