Review of Black Legion (1937) by Todd N — 18 Dec 2012
While I think the plot is oversimplified, the choice to have the protagonist be a character that is seduced by Klu Klux Klan hate is daring and more revealing about the resentments and fears that lead to hate than many more sophisticated stories that only look at it from the outside.
It gives us just enough of a look at a father and husband to care about the man, then it takes him down a dark path. The movie is filled with moral tragedy and it has the courage not to have a just but very un-formulaic ending for the time, or even for today.
