Review of Black Hawk Down (2001) by Tom J — 22 Mar 2011
Just like 'We were soldiers' this film dedicates it's run time to one single day of conflict in one of the most war torn countries on the planet, it didn't leave me wanting for more character development even though that was left to a minimum. I think it's because this seemed more about war and how viceral it can be when it takes over. After having read about the battle of mogadishu it seems fairly true to actual events, not completely but it still needs to entertain as well, the setting and the fever that grips the seemingly thousands of somalis, including civilians to take up arms and start fighting despite the conflict being benificial to them had it been successful is amazing.
The final moments of the film feel like it was all a futile act since nothing was really accomplished other than massive casualties on both sides and hundreds of fatalities, which I think is why I liked this so much. It's not characters because the soldiers are just a faceless force doing their job and even though we get a peak at who they are it isn't important because it's about the job they do in the end and the ultimate price it takes on a person to follow orders no matter what.
