Review of Black Hawk Down (2001) by Derek W — 04 Oct 2013
The film does an excellent job of accurately portraying the traumatic events of the Battle of Mogadishu. It's purpose, however, is very much limited to expressing the point of view of the soldiers involved, their motivations, their struggles, and in 19 separate and painful moments, their tragic deaths.
The film delves very little into the broader debate over the events that went down on October 3rd and 4th of 1993. This is acceptable, however, as it is this very debate, so important to those of us sitting at home watching these events on TV, that mean next-to-nothing to the men on the ground, fighting our battles for us.
These men are almost always motivated purely by the man standing next to them, not the broader political context of the battle they are waging. For this, the film is incredible.
