Review of Black Hawk Down (2001) by Elias H — 28 Jul 2011
Between this and Saving Private Ryan, I'd say watch if you want to see what war is like. What it does to people physically, spiritually and psychologically. How cool it looks to an outsider, but how much hell it is to anyone involved.
Not to be too sarcastic, but I think critics criticizing this movie for "skimming on character development" is like panning Titanic for not getting into the personal lives of the shipbuilders.
I feel like the movie spends about enough time telling you who the heroes are. They're tough yet vulnerable, elite yet unprepared American soldiers who signed a blank check to their country up to and including their lives, and they're following orders while trying to keep each other alive.
What do you want for character development, another 30 minutes of cliche? While I grimace at Josh Hairnet saying a limp-wrist "hooah", Tom Sizemore is always good in a war movie, and it's kinda cool seeing Tom Hardy 9 years before Inception.
The soundtrack is killer and the Blackhawks themselves steal the screen.
