Review of Black Dynamite (2009) by Max J — 26 Jul 2010
When I watched this with my 16-year-old nephew, he thought it was an old 70's movie. I guess that means that the producers did a fine job with this parody/homage to the blaxploitation films of that era.
Not only are the characters and story pretty damn accurate and not far fetched at all, the jokes are dead on target. The fine line between satire and stupid is walked with assurance and confidence here as the jokes never make fun of the genre they are satirizing, but merely reproduce them and make them a bit obvious.
The dialogue and costumes, as silly as they are, are pretty much the same as the ones in the movies they are having some fun with. There are even a couple of scenes lifted directly from "Dolemite" and "Black Belt Jones" for the fans of said movies.
Michael Jai White is fantastic in this and nails the vibe of the movies and isn't too bad with his kung-fu. And don't you interupt him when he is practicing his kung-fu! There is nothing he hates more than kung-fu treachery!! A fun movie and makes you forget "I'm Gonna' Get You Sucka!" as soon as it is done.
A great satire that wasn't seen. Guess people were too busy watching "Meet the Spartans.".
