Review of Black Dynamite (2009) by Liz B — 02 Apr 2011
This sublimely ridiculous blaxploitation homage is still under a lot of people's radars, but for me, Black Dynamite presses all the buttons that the Austin Powers franchise didn't, favouring deadpan over slapstick - it's an affectionate tribute rather than the aimless parody it could easily have become.
It looks great - shot on film, it genuinely looks like it could've been made in the mid-70s, the soundtrack is just brilliant, and Michael Jai White hits every pose, scowl and catchphrase with panache.
He should be a superstar. It does get pretty silly by the end, but it delivers a big, stupid belly-laugh in nearly every scene. Its zippy 90 minutes fly by. Repeated viewings accompanied by some cold malt liquor will do this a lot of favours.
Recommended.
