Review of Black Dynamite (2009) by Dylan G — 17 Jan 2012
A magnum opus of satirical tribute filmmaking. No more. No less. The amount of period detail, film references and jokes is nothing short of substantial, sending up blaxploitation films from the 60s-80s, all the while remaining a tribute to them, from the meta-characters (the actual actors are playing bad actors who are playing characters), to the authentic soundtrack and camerawork, constructed and shot using actual equipment from the 70s.
A satire that knows its history, treats it with respect while poking fun all the same, and working as a legitimate action film in its own right, Black Dynamite is not only up there with other greats of the genre such as Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, but it's a non-stop laugh riot with a baaaaaaaaaaad attitude that's accessible to the average cat on the street, as well as film fanatics and blaxploitation enthusiasts alike.
Solid. Fresh, tight, and out of sight!
