Review of Black Dynamite (2009) by Junior I — 15 Jun 2010
The funniest comedy of the year in my eyes wasn't The Hangover (overrated in my opinion), Role Models (great film nonetheless) or I Love You Man. It was this little indie parody film I watched at the Melbourne International Film Festival called Black Dynamite.
Paying homage (in great fashion) to one of the forgotten but still beloved genre's of the 70's, Blaxploitation Cinema, this takes every cliche & pop culture reference from it's heyday's & layers it with a lot of wit & charm thats usually missing from the likes of the "spoof film" ("dance flick" being a prime example of a parody film minus the wit & charm).
Michael Jai White (who also produced & co-wrote the great script) is fantastic as the dynamite crime fighter, proving he can make us burst out in laughter just as good as he can flex his muscles & kick some serious ass.
The supporting cast is also brilliant, especially all the cameos throughout that will have you pointing out to everyone who's who lol The real beauty of the film is that you don't require a vast knowledge of the past genre to fully enjoy it (though they will get the most kick out of it like myself) newcomers to the genre will find a lot to admire & enjoy.
So do yourself a favour & add this to your must see list of 2010.
