Review of Black Dynamite (2009) by Buddy A — 16 Dec 2010
First off, a confession; I love 1970s blaxploitation movies. Yes, they're incredibly cheesy, transparent, predictable, and oftentimes cringeworthy, but I still love the goofy dialogue, corny kung-fu, hokey acting, leisure suits, and of course, these films almost always have killer soundtracks made up of some of the greatest musicians and bands that ever recorded.
That being said, I think "Black Dynamite" is a spot-on and hilarious send-up of these movies, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Pay attention, Wayans brothers; THIS is how to do a blaxploitation spoof! All the typical tropes are here (and smartly parodied); choppy editing, wonderfully horrid acting (purposefully, of course), bongo-driven chase music, dubbed-in dialogue, posturing, posing, nunchucks, giant guns, kung-fu masters, soul music, leopard-print outfits, platform shoes, and all the pimps, hookers, and drug-dealers you could ever want.
I really laughed hard throughout the entire movie, and if you're a fan of blaxploitation films, you will as well. However, if you are not already familiar with such fare (and can't sit through an entire movie of this type), you will probably have a hard time with this film.
It may be a little slow in places, but otherwise, this is grade-A parody, and I recommend it for all you suckas out there. Dynamite!
