Review of Black Dynamite (2009) by Ian B — 20 Nov 2011
Black Dynamite is a movie that needs to be seen to be believed. I honestly don't think I stopped laughing for the first 20 minutes straight. Part of what makes this movie so original and hilarious is that a lot of the laughs don't come from the dialogue, but from the look of the film....the sets, editing, lighting, music. This literally looks like it was made for $800 back in the early 70's. Black Dynamite knows exactly what it is and delivers everything you'd expect from a blaxploitation spoof/homage.
Unlike most recent comedies that have maybe a handful of memorable laughs, there are just too many to name in Black Dynamite. Who knew Michael Jai White had so much comedic talent? His long, motivational dialogues about cleanin' up the streets had me on the floor. It doesn't hurt that the film has a great supporting cast and some hilarious cameos. I was a little worried the film might overstay its welcome, and while it does start to get a little dry in the third act, it still remains one of the funniest, most original, and most enjoyable comedies I've seen in the last 10 years.
Those looking for something different that the usual dick and fart joke raunch the market is over-saturated with need look no further. If you "get" what this movie is all about then I guarantee it will quickly become one of your favorites. I can't recommend Black Dynamite enough.
